Briefly describe the program, volunteer work, or partnerships you or your organization may offer.
I am a Medical Technologist and have 15 years of experience in this field. A Medical Technologist works in a hospital laboratory and tests blood, urine, and other body fluids for various diseases and disorders. Before being an MT, I worked as a Research Associate in a virology laboratory and helped to discover ways in which viruses interact with our immune system. I have a background in molecular, cell, and developmental biology and genetics and would love to share my love of the biological sciences with students, either as a tutor, a mentor, or by helping teachers implement a class project. Currently, I am a stay-at-home mom and am not affiliated with a specific organization.
You have indicated an expertise in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math
I have Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry and a Masters of Science in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology and Genetics. I have worked in academic research in the role of Research Associate in a virology lab studying Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) where I used genetic manipulation techniques to help discover the roles of different viral proteins the modulation of the host immune system. I have a solid foundation in the biological sciences and in the world of academic research, experiment design, and publication.

After working in research, I went back to school to earn an additional degree in Medical Technology so that I could apply my background in biological sciences to a career in healthcare. For the past 15 years, I have worked as a Medical Technologist (MT) in multiple hospitals. Working in the hospital laboratory, MTs provide accurate test results from blood, urine, and other body fluid samples to physicians so they can make informed decisions regarding patient treatments. I have experience in all areas of the laboratory: Hematology (blood cell counts and microscopic evaluation), Chemistry (metabolic panels, lipid panels, urine chemical content, etc.), Blood Banking (also called transfusion medicine, ensuring compatibility between blood from donor to recipient), and Microbiology (culturing fluids such as urine to determine bacterial content and antibiotic resistance/susceptibility). This field of applied science is particularly exciting to me because there is such a direct and strong connection to patient well being. Also, there is a shortage of people entering Medical Technology, yet hospitals are constantly growing, so there are a ton of career opportunities in this field.
You have indicated an expertise in Outdoors Experience
I think "expertise" is maybe too strong of a word, but I do love hiking and backpacking and sharing this joy with my kids. I have done multi-day backpacking trips with my two daughters (ages 13 and 11) at least twice a year since they were 8 and 6 years old. We practice 'leave no trace' and have had some really fun and educational experiences. I think it's very empowering for my daughters to have the skills to hike carrying all their gear, set up camp in a suitable and safe location, make a fire if appropriate, secure their food, and enjoy the peace of the woods without the need for electronics. I am so proud of them!
