I'm primarily interested in working with high school and middle school students to help them thrive and grow into fulfilled and productive citizens who will contribute to making our struggling world a better place, however they choose to do that. I'm eager to learn more about the Skillmation programs in order to better determine just where and how I can best make a contribution. As of now, I'm particularly interested in working in some capacity with the 9th grade program, which I understand will start at Port Townsend High School this coming academic year. I'm also open to contributing to program development with the Skillmation leaders. I look forward to discussing with you where my experience and skills can best be utilized. Since I'm a retiree, I am not seeking a full-time job! However, I am seeking to make a meaningful volunteer contribution to educating young people and supporting them to succeed. It does indeed take a village!
You have indicated an expertise in Visual and Performance Arts & Crafts
As a certified secondary teacher, I taught Dramatic Arts in public and private high schools for a total of 11 years. This included teaching acting, dramatic improvisation, and dramatic literature, as well as directing more school play productions than I can count.
You have indicated an expertise in Education and Training
I have a lifelong background in education, starting with teaching high school for 11 years -- Drama and Language Arts. I then managed and directed a training/mentoring program for attorneys in large, international law firm. Before retiring, I worked with national energy efficiency non-profit for ten years, directing an energy efficiency education program for K-12 schools and university campuses throughout California. I'm also an accredited life coach and spent a number of years in private practice, working with individuals and groups to help them define and fulfill their aspirations.
You have indicated an expertise in Faith and Spirituality
I have practiced Buddhism (mostly Zen) and yoga for about 30 years. I'm certainly no expert, but I have studied and practiced with excellent teachers over the years, participated in numerous workshops, and have read a great deal of Buddhist literature. I believe meditation is a beneficial practice for all ages and would love to help students learn and practice meditation skills. I could also teach the basic philosophy of Buddhism to interested high school students. I do not consider Buddhism to be a religion or doctrine; rather, it's an mode of inquiry that also provides practical skills for helping people live authentically, lovingly and and peacefully.
You have indicated an expertise in Natural Resources, Ecology, Water and Land Usage
I believe that education and protecting the natural environment are fundamental to everything we may aspire to do and be in our lives. As mentioned above, my experience has been in environmental education, specifically energy efficiency and renewable energy. The programs I directed for 10 years in K-12 schools and university campuses educated students about energy efficiency, along with renewable energy sources, and engaged them in practical, hands-on activities to save energy on their campuses.

I've also been an avid hiker and bicyclist for many, many years, which has enriched my life in oh, so many ways and deepened my experience and appreciation of nature, as well as my spiritual outlook.

Jo is a great contributor to our community.  She is smart and kind and willing to pitch in and do what needs to be done.  Jo and I share the same group of kids at the 2017-18 PTHS 9th Grade Mentor Program.  These kids are lucky to have her insights to help guide them.
